Bringing Dream Designs To Life!

FENWICK HOUSE

THE BRIEF

Fenwick was originally the operation of Bell’s shipyard. The site has important links with the development of the port of Sydney because of it’s association with the use of tug boats as an integral part of shipping operations in New South Wales.

The Sherman family have a large successful contemporary art gallery in paddington and there is a blurring of lines between home life and work.

The ground floor design has a large dining and entertaining area for clients and friends that come over in large numbers frequently. Two floor to ceiling voids have been created along with large wall spaces for the Shermans to exhibit their large contemporary collection of paintings, sculptures and photography.

Design ideas for level one has option A&B – this is for the client to consider whether they would like floor to ceiling glass in both bedrooms and the upstairs lounge room. This would give them an option of looking at the beautiful views from their bedrooms as well as the artwork that would hang from the ceiling in the two voids. There would also be curtains or shutters for privacy on the glass walls.

The upstairs bedroom and living area allow for privacy as a family. They can also have an internal play area for their three year old daughter. This area can also be an office with beautiful views over Sydney harbour. They also have an option of enjoying more views and their art work from these private spaces. This also provides them with a link to their art passion. The historical link of the building is maintained with the sandstone bricks facade and all the original windows and doors spaces maintained. The kitchen is hidden as they regularly get caterers in for entertaining.

Sandstone is extremely stylish and durable. It has a long history of popular use in Australia, dating back to colonial times. Sydney’s 19th century sandstone buildings, have stood the trying tests of time and are proof of its resilience.

There are six windows placed on the northern side of the property. This allows the morning sun to come in lighting and heating this large area up in the winter. The deciduous trees have been placed next to these windows to allow the winter sun to come in and then provide shade in the summertime.

There will be a 600mm eave overhang on the roof to stop the sun from coming in on an angle when it is at its hottest during the summer months.
